Silver Sage Village in Boulder, Colo., broke ground in August 2006 and is Colorado’s first cohousing development for seniors. With a spiritual core, the ecofriendly community has a common meditation room.

Neshama Abraham is a principal in the cohousing consulting firm Abraham Paiss & Associates, cofounder of the Elder Cohousing Network and spokeswoman for the Cohousing Association of the U.S., all based in Boulder, Colo. She is familiar with many of the projects being developed and says that living in community is an important spiritual practice.

Sara Jarrett is a professor of nursing at Regis University in Denver and a member of the Colorado Nurses Association – Government Affairs and Public Policy Committee. The nurses association voted in 2005 to support single-payer universal health care. Jarrett’s work focuses on health care access for the poor.
