Francis Mading Deng is South Sudan’s first ambassador to the United Nations. From 1992 to 2004, he was the representative of the U.N. Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons and from 2007 to 2012 he was the UN Special Adviser for the Prevention of Genocide. He is author of more than 20 books, including War of Visions: Conflicts of Identities in the Sudan (Brookings Institution Press, 1995).
